Update your plan

Hopefully when you created your plan you estimated how long the course would take accuratly. However it is very common to make mistakes when preditcing how long tasks will take. Even the experts make mistakes! So it is important to update your plan as you work through your project.

If you fail to update your plan as you go you will get 0 /5 marks for planning.

Now that you have a good idea at what you need to do for the publication you should be in a better position to guess how long it will take you. To update your plan accuratly follow these steps

Step 1 - Break the problem down

Try and split the problem down as much as you can. As a bare minimum you should consider splitting the problem down into

Step 2 - Estimate how long each sub-task will take

You are in the best position to guess how long it will take you to do each task. If you known that you may struggle then you should estimate a longer time. The more honest you are the more accurate your plan will be

Step 3 - Factor in other courses and cotingency time

We would like to think that ICT is your most pressing concern but we live in the real world and it is likely you will have other demands on your time. When you start a new publication consider what other work you have on and factor this in. If you know, for example, you can not do much ICT homework for a few weeks then you should change your estimates.

Don't forget that things can go wrong too! You could get ill, have to resubmit work, loose your memory stick or get stuck. It is advisably to build some contingency time into your plan to help you just in case something does go wrong.

Step 4 - Don't over estimate!

You still need to finish the course by the final deadline! So make sure your plan does not take you past the final deadline!
