Planning is traditionally the section students find the most difficult but it is a critically important skill to learn! Why else would we have to do it! In the real world you will have a lot of demands on your time. If you do not adequatly plan your time out you will not meet deadlines. That tends to mean brushing the dust off your CV as you have just been fired.

There are three parts to a plan -

• An initial plan
• Monitoring and updating the plan
• Making best use of your time

Honest plans tend to be the most accurate and the most useful.

There are a number of steps you need to follow in order to create your plan -

Step 1 - Deciding on main tasks

Step 2 - Breaking down the tasks

Step 3 - Estimating time

Step 4 - Adding contingency time and holidays

Step 5 - Accounting for external factors

Step 6 - Creating a diary
