Step 5 - Working out the score

Once you have the scores done we need to start calculating the score based on the answer. This is done by -

  1. Linking the answer to the score table
  2. Creating a VLOOKUP to find out the score
  3. Total up the scores
VLOOKUP's are very useful and you must learn how they work. The VLOOKUP guide is a good place to start!

Linking the answer

Each dropdown has what is known as a cell link. This is where it will store what option has been selected. If you have selected the third responce then the cell link will show the value "3". The cell link options are shown in the screenshot above. You should link it to a very clear part of your work as shown in the screen shot below and in this video.

VLOOKUP to calculate the score

The goal is to lookup the value of the score using the cell link value. The image above shows a responce of 3. This means that the user has selected "Twice" as their answer. The score associated with that is 5. To get Excel to find the answer automatically we use the VLOOKUP below.

A VLOOKUP has 4 parts as exmplained in the video and in the guide. If you are not sure then ask your teacher for more help.

Total up the scores

The screenshot above shows a table which will store the scores for each question in a section. The total will give a overall fitness score which will be the basis of the rest of the work. This is a simple addition formula (SUM).
